American Top 40 1979 July 28th
[image=myqEAwKeaF]
"Hello again and welcome to American Top 40. I'm Casey Kasem and we're about to do our weekly countdown of the most popular songs in the USA."

American Top 40 with Casey Kasem aired on radio from July 4, 1970 until August 6, 1988. This recording is a rebroadcast from internet radio.
In this countdown:
Bonnie Pointer of The Pointer Sisters has her first solo hit, "Heaven Must Have Sent You" (at number 39).
Casey notes the band Poco refers to the "Pontchartrain" in their hit, "Heart Of The Night" (at number 32). There really are no chart records being broken in this countdown, so Casey consults the AT40 (Guinness) Book of (World) Records which says the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway Bridge is the longest bridge in the world.
Later, he says one artist in the countdown has a record collection so huge that if he stacked them all on a record player, the spindle would need to be 350 feet higher than the Empire State Building (and Amazon doesn't even carry the regular kind).
The highest debut of the week is "After The Love Is Gone" by Earth, Wind & Fire (at number 32). They also have "Boogie Wonderland" at number 11.
The song "Gold" by John Stewart (with Stevie Nicks) is at number six. Casey reminds this is the first hit for the former member of the Kingston Trio, which is a band that formed in 1957 and continues to this day by replacing members as needed.
A listener asks a question with no question mark! "Dear Casey, I would like to know what song took the biggest jump to the number one spot." Casey relates the fantastic tale from April 4th, 1964, when "Can't Buy Me Love" by The Beatles leapt from number 26 all the way into the number one spot (which gave them the top five spots on the chart). Now there is a band that should have had a membership replacement program!
Casey gives his Special Report on lawyers of the rock stars. One lawyer he spoke with said he was let go from Santana for being the wrong astrological sign.
"Shine A Little Light In My Life" by the Electric Light Orchestra is in spot number eight this week. Casey tell the story of Jeff Lynne's search for the perfect ringing phone sound to open his single "Telephone Line" - a number seven hit for ELO in 1977. He dialed a local London number, then long distance to other cities in Britain, moved on to France, Belgium, the Netherlands, West Germany, Italy, and finally New York City before he was satisfied (that must be why the woman in the song broke up with him. ADD and a high phone bill).

American Top 40 1970 August 1st
[image=myqEAwKeaF]
"Every week from Hollywood we countdown the forty top tunes from Boston Harbor to Pearl Harbor. This is Casey Kasem and the countdown continues."
American Top 40 with Casey Kasem aired on radio from July 4, 1970 until August 6, 1988. This recording is a rebroadcast from internet radio.
In this countdown:
Casey informs that the song "Maybe" by The Three Degrees (at number 35) is a remake of a hit by The Chantels from 1957, and "Summertime Blues" by The Who (at number 33) was first done by Eddie Cochran in 1958, and then by Blue Cheer in 1968.
With only 112 hit songs to his name, the soon-to-be-popular Elvis is at number 24 with "The Wonder Of You."
Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young has back-to-back hits with "Ohio" and "Teach Your Children" (at numbers 17 and 16).
There is a band named War with their hit "Spill The Wine" (at number 7) and a song called "War" (by Edwin Star at number 12).
And from the department of RocketMan FYI: This was one of the first AT40 shows ever broadcast. The program was distributed in mono until September 1972 when the show started recording in stereo. However, as you listen, you may notice the songs in this broadcast (and other rebroadcasts from the mono period) are in stereo. If anyone is bothered by the alteration of this precious piece of history, just unplug one speaker and you will never know the difference!

American Top 40 1984 August 4th
[image=myqEAwKeaF]
"Every week we countdown the most popular songs in the land from Waite, Maine, to Waitville, West Virginia; from Waitsburg, Washington, to Waitsfield, Vermont. At number 23 here's John Waite, formerly of The Baby's with, 'Missing You'."

American Top 40 with Casey Kasem aired on radio from July 4, 1970 until August 6, 1988. This recording is a rebroadcast from internet radio.
In this countdown:
Until this week, only one act in chart history (Michael Jackson) had ever managed to get more than four top 40 singles from one album. Now Billy Joel becomes the second with "Leave A Tender Moment Alone" (at number 39).
The first woman in chart history to have 50 or more top 40 hits is in this countdown as well, debuting with the song that earned her that title. Later, she is on Casey's list of contenders for "oldest woman to ever hit the top 10" but that title went to someone else in this countdown just a week earlier. The AT40 staff should have just left THAT statistic alone!
There is a song ("10-9-8" by Face To Face at number 38) with the lyrics, "I'm always counting down" (and something about never getting to number one), so I am making that my Long Distance Dedication to myself. I want to make sure that I know I understand me and what I am going through.
Four different listeners gang up to ask this question, "What song holds the record for making the biggest move within the top 40?" Mr. Casey says the song in question (by Elvis) moved from numbers 35 to 2 in the second week of November, 1960, but was first recorded more than 30 years earlier by several other artists.
Casey also tells us whatever happened to the band Exile. It seems that in the July 29th, 1978 file I shared last week (now available on 8 track, cassette, and open reel), my assistant Amy introduced their hit, "Kiss You All Over" (in the segment four extra) by saying, "It proved to be the band's only big chart hit." Well she should have said "big POP chart hit" because (according to Casey) members J.P. Pennington and Sonny LeMaire went on to write five songs that claimed the number one spot on the country chart, (3 for other artists, and 2 for their own band EXILE, AMY! Maybe you should lay off the DC juice a little earlier when you know tomorrow is a work day). So I offer my apologies to Exile and anyone who lost a bet because of the misinformation.
In the rock era there have been 10 acts whose names imply they are related when they really aren't. An example would be the Thompson Twins (at number 14 with "Doctor! Doctor!" - that's why Casey brings it up). Then, Casey spotlights the two acts with fake relationships that have had number one hits (but then doesn't list any of the others - and that is called a fake-out!
Finally, you will hear Casey say, "Now, as we get set to hear the number one song in the land, let's check out the number ones on Billboard's other charts. Number one on the country chart is, "Mama He's Crazy" by the Judds. And on the four other major Billboard charts, we have the same artist holding down all the top spots." If you would like a clue to his identity (because you hadn't thought of looking to see who is at number one this week), he is the artist who has had many fake relationships with his own name!

American Top 40 1972 August 5th Top 40 Albums
[image=myqEAwKeaF]
"This is Casey Kasem with a special show this week, You're listening to the nation album countdown on American Top 40."
American Top 40 with Casey Kasem aired on radio from July 4, 1970 until August 6, 1988.
This broadcast is one I found on the internet and is not your usual countdown.
With each chart position, Casey reports the single that holds that spot this week, but plays a track from whatever album is in that spot on the album chart (so the song you hear is not by the artist on the singles chart, but the one on the album chart).
For instance, at position number 22 on the singles chart is "Goodbye To Love" by The Carpenters, but Casey plays "Peaceful Easy Feeling" from the the Eagles self-titled album because it holds position number 22 on the album chart.
When position number 19 gets its turn, on the singles chart was "Take It Easy" by The Eagles, but Casey plays a track from the album at number 19 that week, "In Concert" by Janis Joplin (and the track is "Down On Me").
Then, later on you do get to hear The Carpenters "Goodbye To Love" when their album comes up in spot number 6 right after Casey tells you who had the 6th best selling-single that week.
Also, he doesn't play numbers 36, 31, or 8, but this show had so much good music that I had played it more than a few times.
Enjoy!
